Mole concept

Measuring matter
• A mass
• A volume
• A count
Count
• One dozen = 12
• One mole = Avogadro’s number of items
• Avogadro’s number = 6.022 x 1023
Molar Mass – the mass of one mole of a substance
Determine the molar mass of the following substances.
1. Carbon C = 12.011 g/mol
2. Iron Fe = 55.847 g/mol

Converting between moles and mass.
Example: What is the mass of 5.00 mol of water?
Mass = (moles)(molar mass)
= (5.00 mol)(18.105 28 g/mol) = 90.0764
= 90.1 g/mol )
Molar Volume

• The volume occupied by one mole of a gas at STP
• STP = standard temperature and pressure
• STP = 0ºC and 101.3 kPa
• The molar volume of any gas at STP is 22.4 L/mol
Example: What is the volume of 3.00 mol of carbon dioxide at STP?
Volume = (moles)(molar volume)
= (3.00 mol)(22.4 L/mol)
= 67.2 L )

What is X-Ray photograph?

An X-Ray photograph of any part of body can be taken by interposing that part between the X-Ray tube and the photographic plate.
They are highly penetrating rays and can pass through several materials which are opaque to ordinary light.
These rays can easily pass through flesh and are stopped by bones, the skeleton structure of the concerned part is revealed on the photographic plate. Such a photograph easily detects fractures, foreign matter like a safety pin in throat or a bullet in limb.

Logarithm

The logarithm of a number to a given base is the index of the power to which the base must be raised to be equal to that number.

Thus if ax= N, then x is the logarithm of N to the base a, and written as x =log aN

For example, 100 =102                  so     log10100 = 2
 and (.0001) =(.1)4                        so     log (.0001) = 4

Conversely, if  logaN = x           then             N = ax.

Some important deductions.
(i)                         loga1 = 0 or log of 1 to any base = 0 [ a0=1]
(ii)                      logaa = 1 or log of any number to the same
           base =1 [ a’ =a]
(iii)                   loga∞= ∞, for values of a>1.   [ a∞ =∞]
(iv)                   loga0= -∞, for values of a>1.
                [ a-∞ =1/a∞= 1/∞=0]
